Welcome to Railfan & Railroad Extra Board, a monthly exploration of the passion for trains from many perspectives. Extra Board welcomes your submissions. We’re looking for about 1500 words accompanied by two or three photos. Each photo should be no smaller than 14 inches (or 1024 pixels) across at 72 dpi (no verticals, please). In a little more than two hours, a Metro-North train can whisk you from the rolling pastures of Dutchess County to the concrete canyons of New York. I can go to New York anytime. For now, I’ll enjoy the solitude.

I was born a year after Conrail started operations. I think railfans of our age feel a special affinity for Conrail. I mean, after all, we practically grew up together. Our parents knew Conrail’s parents. We were practically family.
