After Two Day Shutdown, Canadian Pacific and Labor Agree to Arbitration

CALGARY — A brief two-day shutdown was coming to a close after Canadian Pacific and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference agreed to settle an ongoing labor dispute through arbitration.

With arbitration, the railroad and union will meet with an independent third party that will hash out a contract that both sides must accept. According to the union, the main issues at hand included disagreements on wages, benefits, and pensions. Earlier this month, 96.7 percent of TCRC members, which represents about 3,000 CP train service employees, voted to go on strike. However, the union had not filed its official notice. Then, late last week, CP announced it would lock out train service employees. Not long after the lockout went into effect early Sunday morning, TCRC members went on strike.

On Tuesday, trains were starting to roll across the CP system once again.
