Rio Grande 2-8-0 Due for 15-year Overhaul

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

DURANGO, Colo. — The Durango Railroad Historical Society is raising money so that it can complete a federally-mandated overhaul of Denver & Rio Grande Western 2-8-0 315 over the winter of 2021 and 2022. The overhaul is expected to cost $70,000 and the group is hopeful that it can be completed before the spring of 2022.

The narrow gauge locomotive was built in 1895 and restored to operation in 2007 after it sat on display in Durango, Colo. for more than 50 years. The locomotive frequently operates on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic, which has agreed to perform the 15-year inspection. The DRHS’ volunteers will assist with the work.

Meanwhile, the group is preparing to build a brand new carbarn in Silverton, Colo., so that it can protect a number of freight cars it owns. The group also owns a two-stall roundhouse that once belonged to the Silverton Northern. The group hopes to eventually open a rail park in Silverton.

Donations can be sent to: Durango Railroad Historical Society, 315 1472 Inspection, PO Box 654, Durango, CO 81032. For more information, visit www.drhs315.org.
