Parts Arrive at Silvis for UP Steam Locomotives As Restoration Gets Underway

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

Railroading Heritage of Midwest America got an early Christmas gift in December when new flue tubes and stay bolts arrived for Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985 and 2-10-2 5511, both currently being restored in Silvis, Ill.

In 2022, UP donated the two massive locomotives to RRHMA for preservation and operation. The “Challenger” hasn’t operated in more than a decade and the 5511 hasn’t run since the steam era. Other pieces of equipment donated to RRHMA include DDA40X “Centennial” 6936, which ran earlier this year.

The arrival of flue tubes and stay bolts will help push the restoration forward. Other work that will be done in the new year includes rebuilding 3985’s cab floor and inspecting the boiler. A timeline for the restoration’s completion has not been released. For more information visit RRHMA.com.
