STRASBURG, Pa. — Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 611 will be running this fall at the Strasburg Rail Road.

This will be the third season the iconic Class J locomotive has operated at the Pennsylvania tourist road. The locomotive first visited in 2019 and again in 2021. This time, the locomotive stayed in Strasburg over the winter instead of heading south so that work could be done at the Strasburg shop.

From September 30 to October 2, the locomotive will be available for “At-The-Throttle-Experiences” where members of the public can run the locomotive. On October 7 and 9, there will be stationary cab tours available. On November 9 and 10, a photo charter will be hosted with Pete Lerro. And finally, from November 11 to 13, the locomotive will lead excursions on the Strasburg.

“On behalf of the Virginia Museum of Transportation, I’m thrilled to continue our partnership with the Strasburg Rail Road where we have had the opportunity to showcase the Class J 611 to thousands of visitors, perform necessary maintenance and generate revenue essential to preserving the locomotive’s status as an operating steam engine in the years to come,” said Gavin Miller, assistant operations manager and a VMT board member.
