EAST PALESTINE, Ohio — A Norfolk Southern train derailed and caught fire in eastern Ohio late Friday, forcing evacuations in the town of East Palestine, about 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Images on social media showed a massive fire burning near buildings. NS officials confirmed that one of its trains derailed in a statement to WFMJ News. “We are aware of the derailment in East Palestine, and are coordinating closely with local first responders while mobilizing our own teams. We will share more details as they become available,” officials said.

It is unclear if anyone has been injured as a result of the derailment or fire.

Amtrak announced early Saturday that the eastbound Capitol Limited that departed Chicago on Friday would be terminated in Toledo and the westbound would be terminated in Pittsburgh.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
