EAST ELY, Nev. — The Nevada Northern Railway Museum will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a three-day “Iron Horse Symposium” from September 30 to October 2. The event will feature seminars, train rides and special tours.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum opened in 1987 after the railroad ceased operating it in 1983. Nevada Northern has been called one of the most complete examples of a standard gauge railroad from the early 20th century and today features two operating steam locomotives (and a third being restored).

During the event there will be numerous talks and panels about railroad preservation’s past, present and future, with a focus on archiving, photography and more. There will be two train rides and numerous displays in the yard, including 2-8-0 locomotives 81 and 93, Alco RS-2 105, RS-3 109, and recently-restored Baldwin VO-1000 801. There will also be photo opportunities and runbys. Lastly, there will be tours of the railroad’s many buildings in East Ely and at McGill, just north of there, where Kennecott once maintained a smelter. Tickets for the three-day weekend will cost $157.25 for members and $185 for non-members. Capacity will be limited to 60 people. There will also be option add-on tours, including tours of the original main line and the Ruth Mine.
