The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking information about an alleged effort to derail a tourist train on New York’s Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railroad earlier this year. On Wednesday, federal agents announced they were offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the incident.
According to the FBI, agents were contacted in June when an SC&H employee conducting a routine track inspection found that a switch had been tampered with in a manner that could have resulted in a derailment. During a press conference on Wednesday, an FBI official said it was a “terrorist attack because it was a deliberate act to cause injury or death to people.” Tampering with railroad track or equipment is a federal crime.
“While we’re thankful the worst-case scenario was avoided, the FBI and our law enforcement partners will not stand by while someone tries to cause harm to our communities and destroy our small businesses,” said Janeen DiGuiseppi, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albany Field Office.
“Please be assured that we will leave no stone unturned to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for this cowardly act,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo.
Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the FBI by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or submitting a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.
The SC&H began operating excursions on former Delaware & Hudson trackage out of Corinth in 2022.
