CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 “Challenger” 3985 and other pieces of historic equipment recently donated to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America, will begin the journey to their new home in Illinois next month, the Class I announced Wednesday.

The hospital train — featuring 3985, 2-10-2 5511, DDA40X “Centennial” 6936 and more — will depart Cheyenne, Wyo., on November 11, and arrive at Silvis, Ill., about a week later on November 19. The ferry move comes about six months after UP announced that it would donate the equipment to RRHMA, which also owns and operates Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261 in Minnesota.

UP decided to donate the equipment so that it could focus on its operating steam fleet, specifically “Big Boy” 4-8-8-4 4014 and 4-8-4 844.

“The Railroading Heritage of Midwest America shares our deep appreciation of the role railroads have played and continue to play in building America, and we are proud Union Pacific’s legacy will live on for future generations to enjoy and learn from,” said Scott Moore, senior vice president of corporate relations and chief administrative officer.

RRHMA plans on restoring both steam locomotives to service. Locomotive 3985 hasn’t run in a decade and 5511 hasn’t turned a wheel under its own power since the steam era.

“Working alongside our partners at Union Pacific to accomplish this ambitious donation project has been a true labor of love. We’re excited to bring these classic locomotives to our shop, where we can get to work over the winter. I’m grateful to the entire team at UP for their leadership and generosity,” said RRHMA Chairman Steve Sandberg.
