VIA Historical Associations Completes Passenger Car Restoration

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

The VIA Historical Association recently completed the restoration of three passenger cars to add to its growing fleet. The cars, two Dayniters and a baggage car, now wear the iconic blue and yellow of Canada’s passenger carrier.

Those three pieces of equipment will join a VIA sleeper and FP9 6539 (currently Ontario Southland 1400) that will be part of a 50th-anniversary exhibit train the group hopes to run in 2028.

VHA acquired the two Dayniters and the baggage car from Ontario Northland last year and they were moved to a secure location for restoration work over the winter.  VHA President Jason Shron said the cars were in excellent condition and only required painting and cleaning.

VHA has partnered with other groups to save and restore pieces of VIA equipment, including an LRC and RDCs. For more information and to donate to the effort, visit viahistory.ca.
