Three Steamers to Run at Colorado Railroad Museum in May

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

GOLDEN, Colo. — Three classic Colorado narrow gauge steam locomotives will be fired up on May 15 and 16 at the Colorado Railroad Museum. The two-day event will feature recently restored Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0 20; Denver & Rio Grande Western 2-8-0 346; and D&RGW K-37 2-8-2 491. It will be the first time in the museum’s history that three, coal-fired narrow gauge steam locomotives will be under steam.

Both Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, the Museum grounds will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A parade of all three locomotives will kick things off at 9:30 a.m. each morning, with train rides beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing every half-hour until 3 p.m. Special double-headed steam trains, with 20 and 346, will operate at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. both days.

Regular Museum Admission is $10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 ages 2-17, Museum Members and under age 2 free. Train Rides are an additional $4 adults and seniors, $2 ages 2-17, Museum Members and under age 2 ride free.

Locomotive 20 returned to steam in 2020 following a 14-year overhaul. The locomotive was built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1899 for the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad. It was sold to the Rio Grande Southern — which operated between Durango and Ridgeway — in 1916 and ran until 1951. The locomotive was briefly put on display before being moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 1959.
