Severe Washout Derails Norfolk Southern Train in New York

According to several reports, a section of the Southern Tier Line near Attica, N.Y., washed out on Thursday afternoon causing a Norfolk Southern train bound for Mechanicville, N.Y., with loaded autoracks to derail and catch fire. Two local dairy farmers were first on the scene, and helped remove the engineer and conductor who both suffered broken bones and other injuries as a result of the derailment. Preliminary reports indicate a culvert had failed, which caused a significant section of roadbed to fail and undermine the track. The train crew is recovering from their injuries, and NS is working to reopen the line as quickly as possible.
