The River Fox Train, an excursion group operated by the Mendocino Railway out of West Sacramento, Calif., has unveiled a locomotive celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and 200 years of railroading in the U.S.
Sierra Northern Railway 2658, a Railpower RP20GE, received a patriotic commemorative wrap that also pays tribute to the Sacramento-area landmarks. It features the American flag, official America 250 branding and a depiction of the Sacramento skyline and Tower Bridge. While the 250th anniversary of the United States comes to a close next month, the locomotive looks ahead to 2027, the 200th anniversary of railroading in the country. Mendocino Railway says the wrap will remain on the locomotive through next year.
The locomotive will run on the River Fox Train’s seasonal excursions, including the Magical Christmas Train, Old Vine Express, Murder Mystery Dinner Train and Afternoon Tea.
The River Fox Train operates excursion trains over the former Woodland Branch of the Sacramento Northern Railroad, a subsidiary of the Western Pacific. It offers themed train rides year-round out of West Sacramento, including holiday trains, dinner trains and wine and beer trains. The excursion operator is run by the Mendocino Railway, a sister company of the Sierra Northern Railway, which also owns and operates the California Western Railroad’s Skunk Train.
