MRL Train Derails in Montana

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

A BNSF Railway train operating on Montana Rail Link derailed Sunday morning near Paradise, Mont., along the Clark Fork River. No one was injured and no hazardous material was spilled in the incident, according to the railroad.

According to an MRL spokesperson, the train was traveling west when it derailed at about 9 a.m. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Photos of the derailment in local media show a number of reefer cars on the ground with the contents of one — mostly cases of beer — spilled out on the river bank.

We are committed to addressing any impacts to the area as a result of this accident, prioritizing the safety of our employees and the public, and understanding the reasons for this incident,” the railroad said in a statement on Sunday.

The derailment occurred on MRL’s 4th Subdivision west of Missoula. Missoula is where the former Northern Pacific main line splits, with one route going over Evaro Hill and the other going along the Clark Fork River. That means MRL will still be able to move traffic between Spokane and Missoula.
