Moffat Road Museum Acquires Narrow Gauge Shay

GRANBY, Colo. — A Colorado museum has acquired a historic three-truck shay and will be moving it to its facility this month. On July 29, the Moffat Road Railroad Museum in Granby announced that it had purchased West Side Lumber 8. The three-truck shay was built by Lima in 1922 and worked for decades in California.

The Moffat Museum was started in 2006 and is presently in the middle of a major expansion. The museum is open during the summer and between Thanksgiving and mid-January.

West Side Lumber 8 worked in California until the 1960s when it was sold to an individual in Oregon. In 1977, it was leased to the Colorado Central Narrow Gauge Railroad in Silver Plume, Colorado. The locomotive would work there until 2004, when it moved to Georgetown for display. Four years after that, it would be relocated to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City. The locomotive was recently put up for sale.

The locomotive is expected to be moved to Ganby sometime this month, although an exact date has not been selected. Museum officials have encouraged the public to keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.
