The Southern California Railway Museum is trying to raise $50,000 to save a recently-retired Caltrain F40PH-2.
In September, Caltrain launched its electrified service between San Francisco and San Jose, resulting in the retirement of its fleet of 20 F40PH-2 locomotives that have been working on the Peninsula since the 1980s. This fall, those units will be put up for auction (albeit with sections of the prime mover removed, per California law) and SCRM is hoping to acquire one.
If successful, the locomotive would join SCRM’s fleet of historic diesels in Perris, including another F40 that was saved in 2022 from North County Transit District’s Coaster fleet. For more information and to donate, visit this website.
