Two narrow gauge steam locomotives and three former Rio Grande Southern “Galloping Geese” will star in the Denver area’s largest railfan event this weekend at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden.

“Colorado Crossings” is set to take place on Saturday, May 13, and Sunday, May 14, and will feature special excursions and a celebration of a recently-opened exhibition from the Center for Railroad Photography & Art on the work of famous rail photographers Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg. As part of that celebration, the museum plans to operate a recreation of Beebe and Clegg’s famous 1946 excursion over the Rio Grande Southern led by 4-6-0 locomotive 20. The “Beebe and Clegg Photographers Train” will run each afternoon and seating is limited. Rio Grande 2-8-2 491, the state’s largest coal-fired steam locomotive, will also be fired up for the weekend. Special photo opportunities are expected throughout the weekend. A “Parade of Geese and Steam” will take place each day at 9:30 a.m. Roundhouse tours and other activities will also be available.

The photo exhibit, “Beebe & Clegg: Their Enduring Photographic Legacy” has toured the country over the last five years and will be at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden until December.
