CN to Open Intermodal Facility in Calgary

Canadian NationalBy Railfan & Railroad Staff

Canadian National plans on opening up a new intermodal transload facility in Calgary that will allow it to process containers that are loaded from ships onto trains at west coast ports in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, B.C. The railroad said the move will save shippers money by avoiding trucking costs to and from the coast and it’ll generate more traffic for the railroad.

CN is teaming up with Trealmont Transport Inc. (also known as Montship) and Kaptan US on the project and hopes to open the facility during the third quarter of 2024. The new facility will be located at CN’s Logistics Park in Calgary.

“We view Calgary as the next frontier in the transload market,” said Brian McDonald, Chairman and CEO, Montship Inc. “It is ideally suited to serve both west coast gateways (Vancouver and Prince Rupert) and will offer significant advantages to both import and export customers. Teaming up with CN and its unmatched network is a unique opportunity for us. We look forward to working with stakeholders to deliver the benefits this project will present.”
