Alberta Museum Gets C40-8M ‘Draper Taper’

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

The Alberta Railway Museum announced in September that Canadian National had donated a former BC Rail C40-8M “Draper Taper” to the Edmonton-based non-profit.

The locomotive was built in 1990 and joined the CN fleet when the Class I railroad took over BC Rail in 2004. The museum posted on Facebook last week that the locomotive was in “great shape cosmetically” and they were waiting to do a mechanical inspection.

CN, BC Rail and Quebec North Shore & Labrador all owned C40-8Ms. The GE locomotives featured the “Draper Taper” cowl body that was popular on Canadian roads in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Alberta Railway Museum was founded in the 1960s and has an extensive collection of western Canadian equipment, including a CN 4-6-0, a Northern Alberta Railways GMD-1  and Canadian Pacific GP30.
