After Surprise Season, Santa Fe 3415 Goes Down For Overhaul

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

Santa Fe 4-6-2 3415 made her final run this past weekend before being taken out of service for a federally mandated-overhaul. The last run on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad came after the museum discovered earlier this year that the locomotive still had 12 months to go before it needed to be rebuilt

Now the Kansas museum is trying to raise $600,000 to complete the overhaul. That effort got a big boost earlier this fall when a photo charter with the locomotive raised $10,000

Formed in 1993, Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad operates a mix of historic equipment and motive power on former Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific track between Abilene and Enterprise, Kan. The railroad has been operating 3415 since 2009.

Donations can be made through the A&SV website or by sending a check to the railroad’s office at 200 SE 5th Street, Abilene, KS 67410.
