After Auction Snafu, UP to Sell Two Tickets Aboard ‘Big Boy’

Union Pacific is auctioning off two tickets aboard Union Pacific “Big Boy” 4014 after its previous attempt to auction off one ticket on eBay failed.

Earlier this month, the railroad auctioned off a ride aboard the engine scheduled for July 3, to benefit the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. The final bid was over $21,000, but it turns out the winner had made the bid as a joke and had no way of paying for it (the railroad said the winner “manipulated” the contest, although it was unclear if they had done anything more than just place a bid). Now two tickets will go on sale at 5:00 p.m. CT Friday.

The cab ride will take place on July 3, between Pine Bluff and Cheyenne, Wyo., and is expected to take 90 minutes. The lucky winners will be required to arrange ground transportation to and from the ride and arrive 30 minutes prior to departure.

Big Boy 4014 is presently in Omaha, on display for the College World Series. This month’s outing is the first since last year when the locomotive traveled to Denver. The locomotive was restored to service in 2019.
