Two Norfolk Southern freight trains derailed Thursday in Central Alabama, with one prompting an evacuation order in Springville, Ala., just northeast of Birmingham.
The Springville incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m., when an NS train collided with a tractor-trailer and two locomotives along with 34 cars derailed.
A passenger in the tractor-trailer was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, while the driver was not injured.
Local news reported that an evacuation order was issued for a half mile radius around the derailment, but would be canceled after officials determined there was no threat. NS officials say there were no hazardous material leaks and no waterways were affected.
A separate incident occurred in Maplesville, Ala. around 10 a.m., where an NS train carrying trash derailed near homes. Officials say 40 to 50 cars came off the tracks, with 25 of them being stacked on each other.
No injuries were reported in Maplesville and it was determined there was no threat to the public.
Both derailments caused road closures nearby as crews worked to clear the wreckage, and clean up for both derailments will continue for days.
