Standard Gauge East Broad Top 0-6-0 Sold

East Broad Top RailroadBy Railfan & Railroad Staff

A standard gauge 0-6-0 that once worked for the narrow gauge East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania is leaving the Keystone State and will soon be put on display in Alabama

The EBT owned two standard gauge steam locomotives to work the interchange with the Pennsylvania Railroad in Mt. Union. One of those switchers, 0-6-0 3, has been in storage since the railroad shut down in the 1950s. The other was sold to the Waterwater Valley in the 1970s.

While part of the narrow gauge railroad near Orbisonia is being rebuilt, the standard gauge portion near Mt. Union has sat mostly untouched for decades, with locomotive 3 sitting in a shop building. The locomotive was privately owned but was recently sold. The standard gauge locomotive was loaded onto a trailer last week bound for Red Bay Railroad Park in Red Bay, Ala. The locomotive was given a partial cosmetic restoration in Mt. Union, wearing red paint it did not have when it was in service decades ago.
