Amtrak officially took control of Washington D.C.’s Union Station this week following a years-long legal battle. Now that the passenger carrier has full control of the terminal, it plans to upgrade it to improve customer experience, comfort and security.
For years, Amtrak has said it could not make much-needed improvements to the main terminal because it was owned by a real estate investment firm; Amtrak only owned the platforms and tracks. In 2022, the railroad launched and won an eminent domain lawsuit to take full control.
Starting July 29, Amtrak is responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the station. Amtrak officials said they plan on making improvements to the terminal immediately. The railroad will also now manage all retail and office space within the station.
“Washington Union Station is a major transportation hub, tourist destination, and a key asset of our core business,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said. “Amtrak has the experience and vision to create a safer and more welcoming environment for travelers and other visitors and ensure the vitality and longevity of this iconic building.”
Improvements will include adding more seating for customers, improving traffic flow in front of the station, and modifying boarding processes on the main concourse to reduce congestion and upgrade the customer experience. Other immediate plans include setting up an information booth in the Main Hall for customer service representatives to assist travelers and expanding digital and directional signage throughout the station.
“A new and exciting chapter is beginning for Washington Union Station,” Harris said. “Amtrak is committing to ensure this historic station remains a vibrant and welcoming place for all.”
Opened in 1907, Washington Union Station is the second busiest station in the Amtrak national network.
