Trains Crew Hospitalized After Locomotives Collide in Alabama

Four railroad employees were airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries resulting from a locomotive collision on the Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway in Pickensville, Ala., on December 28. The accident occurred shortly at about 4:30 pm on a double-tracked section of the Genesee & Wyoming-owned shortline between the south side of Pickensville and the trestle at Big Creek.

No information was immediately available on the cause of the collision, though a Pickens County official said, “Evidently there was a mistake in communication.” County Emergency Management Director Ken Gibson said no cars were being pulled when the collision occurred. The official cause of accident will be determined by the NTSB. Video from the scene showed AGR 3311, an SD40-2, and at least two other units.
