From Western Maryland to Maryland Midland

Photo Line Welcome to Photo Line! The Maryland Midland Railway (MMID) began operations in 1980 over a section of the former Pennsylvania Railroad Frederick Secondary. In 1983, MMID began operations on the former Western Maryland main line from Emory Grove to Highfield from CSX. The MMID is best known for its fleet of EMD power, all painted in striking blue and orange paint scheme. In 2008, the railroad was purchased by Genesee & Wyoming Industries, which slowly began to integrate this line into its global short line network. Join photographer Jim Kleeman for a look back at the colorful operations of the Maryland Midland!

Union Bridge, Maryland

Looking to all the world like the Western Maryland reincarnated, MMID 794 leads a freight past the old Union Bridge depot. Once headquarters for the railroad, it is now home to the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society.

Now that's EnterTRAINment!

The EnterTRAINment Line was an excursion business that operated over the MMID from 1990 to 1995. This passenger excursion was photographed near New Windsor, Maryland, in 1990.

A very short train climbs up the Catoctin Grade amidst beautiful fall foliage on October 28, 2007. After it's brief "black" period, the MMID settled on an attractive blue and orange paint scheme for its entire fleet of locomotives.

Train UBEG splits the inactive Western Maryland signals at MP 44.7 just east of Union Bridge on February 20, 2011. Locomotive 302 was the only one to receive the MMID "mountain" logo on the nose. The unit was involved in an accident and was later repainted without the nose logo.

After arriving at Union Bridge the crew typically pushes the empty cement hoppers up the hill to the Lehigh plant. Patches of snow cover the ground on January 14, 2011.

After swapping cars with CSX in Highfield, a short UBHF rolls down the hill between Sabillasville and Thurmont through the small community of Lantz, Maryland.

The fall foliage and restored WM station in Union Bridge complement the new G&W paint scheme on October 25, 2011. As attractive as it may be we will still miss the classy MMID blue and orange when it disappears.
