Welcome to Photo Line! Preserved heritage railroads offer an opportunity to recreate everyday scenes and take a step back in time. On Friday October 7, 2011, Pennsylvania's East Broad Top hosted a photo freight as part of its annual Fall Spectacular. Photographer Alex Mayes shares his photos from East Broad Top's Fall Spectacular.
Colgate Grove
The photo freight consist was comprised of four EBT coal hoppers, two vintage box cars, a tank car and EBT wooden caboose No. 27. A rider coach was coupled onto the rear of the consist to transport passengers to the photo locations, which was uncoupled before each runby. This photo was taken at the runby at Colgate Grove after the train was turned on the wye.
Through the countryside
Fall foliage is just starting to emerge in this part of Pennsylvania as the silence of the countryside is broken by another runby of the photo freight, about two miles north of Orbisonia.
Ballasting demonstration
Included in this year's events was a demonstation of EBT's reconditioned side-dump ballast car No. 802, seen here dumping and spreading ash on the right of way a mile north of Orbisonia. This two-bay ballast car was purchased by the EBT in 1913, and was originally a bottom-drop car. The EBT converted the car to side-dump configuration in the 1930's, and it was used until 2004 when it was taken out of service due to rust and other deterioration of the rivets and slope sheets. In 2005 the Friends of the EBT arranged to have CNH America, Inc. fabricate new steel components, and then FEBT volunteers installed the new parts and made repairs to the car to return it to operation.
